Episcopal Church World Mission Sunday:
 Mi
ssion is Transformational

  Sunday, February 19

[February 9, 2012] The 2012 World Mission Sunday in the Episcopal Church will focus on Mission Is Transformational.

World Mission Sunday, always observed the last Sunday after Epiphany, is February 19. The annual observation was designated to increase awareness of, and participation in, the wider global mission of the Episcopal Church.

"Conversations, presentations, and workshops at the recent Everyone Everywhere 2011 Mission Conference highlighted the transformation that all who are engaged in mission experience," explained the Rev. David Copley, Mission Personnel Officer. "Participating in Gods mission for the world transforms us as individuals, communities and a Church."

World Mission Sunday is an ideal focus for Sunday School lessons, adult education, discussions and forums, prayers of the people and other events in the life of a congregation and diocese.

Copley pointed out that World Mission Sunday is an opportunity to connect local congregations and parishioners with the wider church and its international work.

Resources for World Mission Sunday, available in Spanish and French, are here or here http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/world-mission-sunday  and include bulletin inserts; suggested sermons; suggested reading; and other info.

The forty days of Lent provide a time to reflect on our Christian faith and prepare ourselves for the celebration and season of Easter. During Lent we are called to slow down and consider our baptismal vows as we move toward the celebration of the resurrection of Christ and season of Easter. It is a time for us to prayerfully consider how we can unite in healing a hurting world.
This year's Lenten Meditations guide us to a deeper understanding of God's call in our lives and provide a particular emphasis on promoting health and fighting disease while preparing ourselves for healing.  Co-authored by a group of leaders from across The Episcopal Church, our writers reflect on their favorite scripture passages and other sources of spiritual wisdom.

For a Lenten Study this year I want to invite you all to share in a journey with Scripture that continues a theme of engaging the Bible in order to be transformed into the image and likeness of God.

Fr. Richard Rohr OFM, of the Center for Action and Contemplation has put together a series of meditations for Lent focusing on ‘coming into one’s own’ in God.

Here is a link to the book and a description of the process

http://tinyurl.com/wondrousencounters

We will meet on Wednesday nights at beginning on Ash Wednesday following the evening service.  Subsequent meetings will be on Wednesday nights at 7 pm in either the Tait or Sickles Rooms.

I would also consider facilitating a Saturday morning group if there is enough interest in doing two groups.

If you’re interested, please let me know ASAP.  If you are ready to commit to the Wednesday group please let me know, we can save on shipping if we order all of the books together.

Peace and Good,
The Rev. Warren Hicks

We must admit this is what all of us do anyway, as “God comes to us disguised as our life”! Remember, always remember, that the heartfelt desire to do the will of God is, in fact, the truest will of God. At that point, God has won, and the ego has lost, and your prayer has already been answered. To sum up the importance of an alternative mind, this message from an unknown source says it all: Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. Wed, 25 Jan 2012 06:44:18 -0800 Eliza Griswold to lecture on cradle of Christianity and Islam, Jan. 31 http://stlukesworcester.org/eliza-griswold-to-lecture-on-cradle-of-christ http://stlukesworcester.org/eliza-griswold-to-lecture-on-cradle-of-christ Dear St. Luke’s Community,

This came to my attention this morning and I pass along this opportunity to you as well.

--Padre Warren

 Good morning,

We want to invite you to attend an upcoming lecture at the College of the Holy Cross by Eliza Griswold titled "Along the Boundary of Faiths: Christianity and Islam on the Tenth Parallel" on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 4:30 p.m. in the Rehm Library, Smith Hall.

An award-winning investigative journalist and poet, Griswold spent much of the past seven years traveling in Africa and Asia between the equator and the line of latitude 700 miles to the north, known as the tenth parallel. It is here, far from the Middle East, where more than half of the world’s two billion Christians live along with half of the world’s 1.3 billion Muslims.  In her book, The Tenth Parallel: Dispatches from the Fault Line Between Christianity and Islam, Griswold tells the 1,500-year-old story of how Christianity and Islam have come to intersect and interact and finds that the most important forces shaping the future of the world’s religions are those contests unfolding within them, not between them.

Griswold is the daughter of Frank Griswold, former presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. She is a senior fellow at the New America Foundation. Her talk is free and open to the public. You may read more about the event here: http://news.holycross.edu/blog/2012/01/24/holy-cross-lecture-to-explore-cradle-of-christian-muslim-relations/ and for directions to Rehm Library, please visit http://www.holycross.edu/directions/sites.html .

Please let me know if you would like additional information.

 Sincerely,

Annual Report 2011.pdf Download this file

Dear Folks,

In an ongoing attempt to be environmentally concious and knowing that we have had a consistent surplus of annual reports in years past, we are printing a limited number (50) of annual reports for tomorrow’s meeting.

The report is attached to this email as a .pdf document.  This iteration differs slightly from the printed copy available at church tomorrow.  The change to note is that the nominees for youth delegate are Shantell Norgren and Merry Gibbons.  Jonathan Hicks has withdrawn his name from consideration.

I encourage you to take a look at this document, particularly the spending plan for 2012. We are again projecting a deficit, but believe that we have within our means ways of bridging that gap.  These options include, but are not limited to; expanded fundraising efforts, additional pledge funds and grants.

During the liturgy tomorrow we will gather to receive this report, elect officers, vestry and delegates to Diocesan Convention do whatever other business deemed necessary.  I hope that, despite the weather and parking conditions you’ll come and celebrate our common life in the spirit and share in fellowship and food following the Eucharist and Meeting.

Peace and Good,
The Rev. Warren Hicks

Thu, 19 Jan 2012 08:08:57 -0800 REMINDER-Annual Meeting this Sunday http://stlukesworcester.org/reminder-annual-meeting-this-sunday http://stlukesworcester.org/reminder-annual-meeting-this-sunday Dear Folks,

Please remember that this Sunday is the Annual Meeting and Celebration of Mission and Ministry here at St. Luke’s.

There is to be one service only at 9 am.  We have asked folks to sign up if you are attending and give us some idea of what you might bring and how many there might be.

We don’t have many on the sign up sheet and need to know how many to set tables for at Brunch.  If you have not made your response, please email ASAP with the number you’ll have in attendance and what you might be contributing to our common meal!!

Peace and Good,
The Rev. Warren Hicks
